Senseless was x:machine’s inaugural production. Senseless was written and conceived as part of an online collaboration on the Polyopticon Website – Polyopticon.org. The initialisation of the project included inviting 12 international writers online to establish and clarify the story world of the work.

Senseless is set in 2027 under the hegemonic dictatorship of the Trade Nations of America (TNA). In an attempt to control the growing population, increase in pollution and lack of oil, the TNA have enforced various policies and regulations that demand citizens remain indoors, with minimal personal or outside contact.

People who disobey these laws are ‘Censored’. The ‘Censored’ exist inside a virtual prison. They have been lobotomised and their brains are hooked up on life support as a means of research into criminal consciousness. Although there are some exceptions, most of the ‘Censored’ have been censored for sex-crimes.

The main character, Mitnick was chosen by the ‘Censored’ as a medium to give them a voice. She tells their stories of what life was like before the TNA, of how they were ‘Censored’, and of their virtual world and prison. Mitnick is the daughter of one of the Executive Members of the TNA. The ‘Censored’ are using Mitnick to channel their stories in the hope that they will be released, or that this will stop.

Prior to this Production there have been two Creative Developments. The project, both on and off line has included over 25 artists, coming together under the banner of x:machine.
